About the region - The unique Jurassic Beach
Around 170 million years ago, the São Bento area was submerged under a shallow sea where life left numerous marks in the form of fossils. This geological heritage gave rise to the landscape now known as Jurassic Beach, still visible in the Cabeço da Ladeira quarry.
Over the centuries, the local population transformed the land for agricultural purposes, removing loose stones and using them to build the characteristic dry-stone walls that today define the regions landscape.
One of the most impressive natural phenomena are the mega-lapiés large limestone formations with remarkable shapes that stimulate the imagination. These can be observed in nearby villages such as Moleanos, Paiã or Covas, contributing to the geological and scenic uniqueness of this area.
